There is a nice reason why dogs seem particularly at home at Unchagaon.
The present custodian of the property has always had a soft spot for dogs, and two of them, Rocky and Rani, are now very much part of life at the fort.
Their names have a rather entertaining connection to the property too. Rocky and Rani were named after Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which was filmed at Fort Unchagaon. So, if you arrive at the fort and hear someone calling out for Rocky or Rani, there is a good chance they are not talking about the film.
The two resident dogs have become familiar faces around Unchagaon, adding to the feeling that this is a lived-in heritage home rather than a resort where everything is kept carefully out of reach.
One of the biggest advantages of bringing a pet to Fort Unchagaon is simply the amount of open space.
The property spreads across 19 acres, with gardens, lawns, courtyards, orchards and outdoor areas where dogs can spend time outside their rooms.
The Lawn is the largest open space at the fort, with plenty of room for running around and playing with your pet. It is ideal for outdoor games, long picnics or simply spending a few hours outside together.
The Queen's Courtyard opens out from the rooms, making it an easy spot for slow mornings with your pet. Wake up, step outside with a cup of chai and let your dog enjoy the courtyard while you take your time.
The courtyard next to the Diwan Khana gives your pet some outdoor space while you get on with your day. Let them wander around while you are in a meeting or with a gathering inside.
The Machan is a smaller, tucked-away space at the property, with a more secluded feel. It makes a good spot for a quiet meal or some downtime with your pet.
And then there are the mango orchards and gardens that connect these spaces.
Travelling with a pet becomes considerably easier when you do not have to pack the entire house.
At Fort Unchagaon, arrangements for your pet can be made on request. Depending on your requirements, these can include dog bowls, treats, toys and sleeping beds.
If your dog has specific needs, it is best to let the team know before your arrival so the appropriate arrangements can be made.
We also recommend bringing your pet's usual food, medication and any familiar belongings they may need during the stay. Dogs tend to appreciate a little familiarity, even when everything else around them is new.
At Unchagaon, the heritage fort gives you plenty to do during the day. You can spend time exploring the property, sit out in the courtyards, enjoy a meal, take a walk through the orchards or simply settle into one of the many outdoor spaces.
Your dog does not have to be left alone in the room every time you want to sit outside.
The property also has a pool, gardens and a range of indoor and outdoor activities, making it easy to spend a weekend without having to plan an elaborate itinerary.
For pet parents looking for weekend getaways near Delhi with dogs, the short drive is another advantage. You can leave Delhi in the morning and be at the fort in time for lunch, without putting your pet through a long journey.
Fort Unchagaon is close enough to Delhi for a spontaneous weekend and far enough to feel like you have left the city behind.
There are no long flights, complicated transfers or hours of travel involved. Just a road trip, a heritage fort and enough open space for your dog to actually enjoy being away.
It is a particularly good fit for dogs who are happier outdoors and for owners who would rather have their pets with them than arrange for someone else to look after them for the weekend.
